There is a reason that so many of us look to French style for inspiration - from clothing to interiors to cuisine. The French way of life simply seems to take these things, the comforts in life, the moments of relaxation, the odd glass of wine or the shared smiles over an espresso, a bit more seriously. The two apartments featured in this post, both from designer Margaux Beja, are lovely modern tributes to these French priorities. The designs manage to mix the old world charm of the French spaces they occupy with entirely modern and chic elements for comfortable and timeless looks that are clearly situated in that lovely joie de vivre that is so famous.
1 |The first apartment is in the heart of Marais and measures 50 square meters (538 square feet). Exposed wood beams from the original structure really pop against white walls for an effective eclectic design. Natural materials are used throughout the space to play off of these stunning means. A solid walnut wall conceals the practical spaces of the house while class separates out the bedroom, allowing plenty of sunlight to filter into this top floor apartment.

10 |Despite the overall age of the home, clean modern lines prevail in each of the newer elements. From a sleek butcher block countertop to a small wooden desk nook that overlooks the streets below, the home manages to feel completely updated without losing its classical charm.

20 |The second apartment keeps that modern feel but has less of the character that comes from those older elements. Referred to as “The Cube” the home has lots of hidden storage areas and nooks to make the small, urban space quite livable without a lot of clutter. Built in shelving, window seat storage, and a small kitchen area are each quite efficient. The furnishings are simple and mid-century inspired, from the white Eames style dining chairs to the nesting coffee tables and even the creative overhead light fixture in the living room.
